Getting Started with iChat
Here’s how to set up iChat for the first time. We’ll create a Jabber Account — Jabber is one of many protocols for Instant Messaging (IM). This assumes that you’ve already set up an account with a Jabber Server, that will include an address, ie, myname@jabber.com, and a password. Though based on Jabber, this set up will probably work for other types of IM accounts.
Open iChat
Open iChat by selecting from your Dock or by double-clicking on the iChat icon in your Applications folder. Click on Continue in the Welcome window.
Jabber Settings
1. Account Type is Jabber Account.
2. Account Name is the Full Jabber address.
3. Password is whatever was set up for your Jabber Account.
4. Click on Continue
5. This should take to a Conclusion window, click on Done.
6. If it does not successfully Conclude, then there must be some discrepency between your settings and the settings that were set up at the Jabber Server.
Open Jabber List
Connect With Buddies
Your Jabber List shows any Buddies — those who you are connected to via Jabber addresses — and will show if they are online or not. If a Buddy is online, you can hilite their name and then choose from the bottom icons to connect:
1. By Text Messaging
2. By Voice
3. By Video, with Voice
4. By Screen Sharing
If you want to Add a Buddy, click the plus sign and select Add Buddy.
Adding a Buddy
The Account Name is the full Jabber Account which your friend has given you. First and Last name is how the Buddy will be identified in your Buddy list.
Fill in, then click on Add, and this sends a message to the friend saying that you want to Connect.
If the Account Name is correct, and the Buddy is online, and they Appprove, then a connection will be made and you can start communicating.
Conversely, if you have given your Account Name to another Jabber user, they can send the message to you, asking your Approval, and they can initiate the communication.
Settings for Screen Sharing
If you want to use iChat for Screen Sharing then both Buddies must have mac OSX 10.5 )Leopard) with Screen Sharing enabled.
Open System Preferences from the top left Apple Menu.
In System Preferences Panel, click on Sharing (third row, fourth column)
Set Up Remote Management
1. Click on Remote Management.
2. Check All Users.
3. Click on Options.
Check Everything, then OK
You’re ready for Screen Switching.
Your Buddy must have the same settings…….
