Setting Up Mail Accounts

This covers how to set up new email accounts using Apple’s Mail.app. It assumes you’ve already set up an email account with an internet service provider or webhost. We’re focusing on email that is served by DreamHost as part of a personal webdomain, ie, me@mysite.com, but the settings will apply to most mail servers.

Open Preferences from the Mail menu.

Click on Accounts

Add an Account

Click the plus sign, bottom left of the Accounts box.

Input Email Info

Full Name is the name that will appear on your outgoing emails. Email Address is the full email address for this account, and password is whatever you set up with your mail server.

Add Server Info

These are settings you get from your mail server. For DreamHost: the Account Type is Pop. Description is to indentify this account for you, if you have more than one email account. Incoming Mail Server is mail.yourdomain.com. User name is your full email address. And password is the same as previous.

Ignore "Verify Certificate."

If you get this window, just click on Connect.

Outgoing Server

Description is for your purposes. Outgoing Mail Server is mail.yourdomain.com. Check User Authentication and, if it doesn’t fill in the form for you, User Name is the full email address and usual password.

Working?

You see a window like this, in which case click on Create. If the set up wasn’t successful, retrace the steps and try again.

Fine Tuning

Just a couple settings to adjust. From the main Accounts window, with the new Account hilited (if you have more than one listed in the left panel), click on the arrows on the Out Going Mail Server menu, and select Edit Server List.

Hilite the Account, then click on Advanced.
